The Residential Custodian physically completes the various tasks required to maintain assigned buildings and areas, generally, but not exclusively, within the student residential community, in a clean and orderly condition. A person in this position engages in the work of cleaning campus facilities, according to instructions and/or documented best practices. This work includes performing heavy cleaning duties, such as: cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, cleaning showers and restroom, cleaning stoves and gas bar-b-que grills, cleaning laundry rooms, emptying all interior trash containers and removing litter and rubbish from building front ad rear entrances. Duties also include reporting an safety concerns or unsafe conditions that require correction, or any other items needing repairs. The Residential Custodian is also responsible for ensuring that all work is accomplished in a safe manner at all times, in compliance with adopted standards, and for striving to produce the best possible results. Occasionally, the work assigned to Residential Custodian requires that person to work in facilities outside of the student residential community, sometimes including traveling to other locations. The person in this position also completes the cleaning of some exterior areas with the student apartment hallways as an example.

Duties

  • Ensure that all work is completed in safe manner at all times, in compliance with adopted standards. This includes, but is not limited to, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) and the following of safe work practices.
  • Report any unsafe conditions observed or encountered while completing assigned work.
  • Immediately report any accidents or injuries supervisor.
  • Perform physical work to complete the cleaning of assigned area in the time allotted.
  • Advise Lead when work load or conditions encountered will cause the assignment to not be completed in the allotted time.
  • Accept changes in work assignments demonstrating a commitment to flexibility and teamwork
  • The work assigned to this position occurs within shared student living spaces. It is imperative that resident students, and their guests, are treated with utmost courtesy and that their privacy is respected at all times.
  • Report any items that need repair or maintenance.
  • Service, clean. and supply restrooms.
  • Gather and remove trash from trash receptacles and building areas and deposit in "trash dumpsters."
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming as is appropriate for the flooring surface.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage or injury.
  • Mix cleaning solutions in containers according to specifications.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Spray insecticides and/or set traps to prevent insect and rodent infestation.
  • Drive vehicles as required to complete assignments, including vans, small trucks, or electric vehicles.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies in good and appropriate condition.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water, using commercial cleaning equipment, de-humidifiers, etc.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, and ladders to prepare facilities for special events such as banquets and meetings.
  • Report any perceived needs for major repairs to, or modifications of, campus facilities or building systems to the Lead Residential Custodian, Lead Residential Maintenance Specialist, or Management of Custodial Residential Services.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and a criminal, educational, and employment background screening. Ability to follow verbal and basic written instructions in English. Ability to operate and care for related tools and equipment. Ability to work as part of a team. Normal mobility and range of motion. Ability to lift objects weighing 50 Pounds, and to carry objects weighing 30 pounds for 100 feet. Willingness to observe strict safety standards including the safe safe use of equipment and materials. Must have a valid California driver's license and be insurable by the University's insurance carrier. Must be flexible to accept assignments at various campus locations. Willingness to work extended shifts, especially during special events of emergencies. Interpersonal skills, self-starter, innovative.

Preferred: High School Diploma or Equivalent. One year of custodial work experience.

This is a temporary, non-exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
