The University Copy Editor is charged with managing, articulating, and enforcing all editorial policy for the University, ensuring appropriate literary style, grammar guidelines, and brand alignment across all flagship publications in print, digital, social media, and new media platforms. Integrated Marketing Communications is directly tasked with supporting the University’s mission and strategic plan by building brand equity, elevating the University’s national reputation, providing strong and consistent institutional message leadership, and implementing effective integrated marketing and communications strategies. The University Copy Editor fulfills a central role in helping the department accomplish its goals.


  • Serve as the lead copy editor for Pepperdine University, ensuring that all publications follow University style and grammar guidelines
  • Research and fact check all content, ensuring accuracy and standard formatting of all names, titles, dates, and other identifying information for the University community and campus facilities
  • Demonstrate exemplary customer service while working collaboratively with schools, divisions, and departments on signature editorial initiatives
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce the University Editorial Style Guide
  • Write original letters, articles, captions, and other material for print and digital platforms
  • Manage development of University collateral, including all campus maps and the annual Facts Brochure
  • Monitor uniform statistics representing enrollment, fundraising, academic, financial, and other University performance indicators
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree in English, literature, journalism, creative writing, or similar area; at least three years of demonstrated experience in editing, proofreading, and/or copywriting. Superior proofreading and copyediting skills and the ability to evaluate the content and structure of written material; superior written and verbal communications skills; strong project management skills; demonstrated experience in successfully working with peers; demonstrated success at working under tight deadlines; professional appearance; basic ability to post content within digital platforms; proven skills in letter, feature, and news writing; commitment to the University mission. Proficiency in Google Apps for Education.

Preferred: Experience working in an academic environment preferred; experience using the Chicago Manual of Style highly preferred. Understanding of issues and editorial standards pertinent to higher education. Proficiency in Workfront, Raiser’s Edge, and Adobe Creative Cloud.

This is a regular, exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
