Under general supervision of the Chief Human Resources Officer, provides strategic leadership for campus-wide safety and environmental health programs.


  • Provide guidance for, expertise on, and management of University occupational, environmental, and safety programs. Initiate and participate in planning, developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and programs necessary to ensure the workplace safety and health, protection of the environment, and safety of facilities, programs, and operations. These include, but are not limited to programs involving workplace health and safety, asbestos, and moisture intrusion.
  • Oversee University environmental health, safety, and occupational training programs, including safety trainings in the University Learning Management System (LMS), and ensures applicable programs are in compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, including, but not limited to, Federal OSHA and Cal/OSHA.
  • Conduct and attend reviews and inspections to monitor compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and procedures.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Human Resources, Public Safety, Regulatory Affairs, Facilities Services, Campus Operations, Planning, Operations, and Construction (POC), and other University departments as applicable. Provide general guidance to other University departments as applicable.
  • Administer the reporting of University hazardous materials and work jointly with the Department of Public Safety for hazardous materials inspections.
  • Partner with University academic divisions and faculty to implement University health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a resource to University managers and supervisors regarding occupational accident investigation and reporting.
  • Routinely attend meetings with stakeholders for purposes of coordination and presenting information. Chair the operational Quarterly Safety Committee and participate as a member on the quarterly Worker's Compensation claims review.
  • Produce written communication to University community, regulatory agencies, and the community at large.
  • Serve as Critical Support Personnel for Pepperdine's Emergency Operations Committee in the case of emergencies.
  • Train and co-supervise student workers.
  • Participate in the Daily Line Up as a part of the Living Pepperdine program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree. Ability to manage several projects in parallel, with particular attention to detail. Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team, and to meet required deadlines. Ability to consistently project a professional demeanor and a positive attitude. Strong English written and verbal skills. High-level computer skills in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Google applications.

Preferred: J.D. or Masters Degree. The ability to work effectively with individuals from different backgrounds. Conversational Spanish.

This is a regular, exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
