This position supports information security for the University.

Duties

  • The Senior Security Analyst will: test and verify the implementation of necessary security controls to protect the University’s infrastructure from intentional or inadvertent attack and from unauthorized access, modification or destruction; analyze system and network data to identify systems threats and vulnerabilities in network and system infrastructure; document and maintain management procedures for systems security tools; and work closely with the Director and IT operational managers to ensure that security best practices and University security policies are being followed.

  • Participates regularly in security event review  and defense.

  • Provides security operations support through regular participation in vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection and log analysis.

  • Provides defense through intrusion/vulnerability follow-up and system improvement.

  • Performs incident handling tasks according to formal methodology (Preparation, Identification, Containment, Eradication, Restoration, and Lessons Learned) and assists colleagues with understanding and complying with incident handling steps.

  • Participate regularly in information sharing communities of which the Information Security Office is a member, both monitoring and supplying information about threats and attacks.

  • Designs, develops, implements, and operates/maintains security controls and monitoring systems.

  • Provides proactive network monitoring and vulnerability assessment for all systems on Pepperdine University networks or contracted for Pepperdine University use.

  • Responsible for implementing required security configurations and installations. Primarily focuses on security administration.

  • Proposes and recommends improvements and assists in the implementation of enterprise-wide security standards, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Runs security analysis reports using commercial tools or custom scripts and documents, communicates and follows up on gaps.

  • Maintains all security log-on credentials and data access including specific access to applications, networks, files, and database management systems.

  • Assists in security audits. Inspects security logs to uncover possible security violations (e.g., break-ins, unauthorized activity).

  • Performs system backups for operational recovery and forensic backups needed for evidence gathering.

  • Executes requests for account creation, modification, or deletion on security systems.

  • Checks existing accounts and data access permission against documented authorizations.

  • Provides security support for application and infrastructure-related projects.

  • Resolves problems and assists with security incident handling.

  • Provides timely and complete project status reports per standard or on request.

  • Trains colleagues on the administration of security tools that control and monitor information security.

  • The Senior Security Analyst will consult with the Director on best practices and products for security solutions and security related aspects of server/network system architectures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Requires 5-6 years of IT work experience, knowledge of security issues, techniques, and implications across all existing computer platforms. Requires a current and approved certification in intrusion analysis that includes network and server system fundamentals (may be completed within introductory period). Requires bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or other related field, or equivalent work experience.

This is a regular, exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
