Maintain University grounds by completing assigned landscape maintenance or grounds keeping activities, such as litter and trash removal; planting and maintaining ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns, and hardscape; as well as applying fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals, according to instructions or documented best practices. The completion of other work including campus brush clearance, erosion control, preparation of campus areas for special events, and other special project work is also a responsibility of this position. The Landscaper physically completes the various tasks required to maintain the university grounds. This work includes, but is not limited to: mowing, trimming, cutting, blowing, watering, power washing, etc. The Landscaper is responsible for ensuring that all work is accomplished in a safe manner at all times, in compliance with adopted standards, while striving to produce the best possible results. The Landscaper is also responsible for answering inquiries from visitors or university community members regarding methods and materials, or general inquiries about the university, in a professional manner.


  • Ensure that all work is completed in safe manner at all times, in compliance with adopted standards. This includes, but is not limited to, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) and the following of safe work practices.
  • Report any unsafe conditions observed or encountered while completing assigned work.
  • Immediately report any accidents or injuries to supervisor.
  • Perform physical work to complete the landscaping tasks within an assigned area in the time allotted.
  • Walk area of assignment at the beginning of each shift and remove all litter from campus grounds when it is first observed. This includes, but is not limited to, removing any litter observed from any campus areas while traveling to area of assignment, cleaning and emptying cigarette urns and trash receptacles, removing trash from landscape plants or planting areas, etc.
  • Advise Lead Landscaper when work load or conditions encountered will cause the assignment to not be completed in the allotted time.
  • Confer with Lead Landscaper to develop plans and schedules for landscaping maintenance and improvement.
  • Plant and maintain landscape vegetation, including trees, through activities such as mulching, fertilizing, weeding, watering, mowing, and pruning.
  • Safely and effectively operate powered equipment such as: walk behind power mowers, edgers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, power trimmers, chain saws, roto-tillers, power augers, sod cutters, and pruning saws. This includes the inspection of equipment each time prior to commencing work using that equipment. Including checking oil and fluid levels, confirming guards and shields are in place, etc.
  • Report any irrigation problems observed. This includes, but is not limited to; leaks, broken or misaligned sprinklers, "too wet" or "too dry" spots, etc.
  • Comply, at all times, with all applicable regulatory agency standards, requirements, laws and regulations, etc.
  • Wash and clean site fixtures including, but not limited to: trash can tops, campus signs, bus stop benches, tables and benches, hand rails, etc.
  • Complete assigned work and ensure that instructions are followed, deadlines are met, and schedules are maintained.
  • Prepare and properly maintain all required records, including, but not limited to: work activity reports and work orders, supplies or materials purchased or used, chemical use reports, water loss/use reports, etc.
  • When requested, or when appropriate, assist team members in performing assigned duties and work as necessary to meet deadlines and maintain schedules.
  • Accept changes in work assignments demonstrating a commitment to flexibility and teamwork
  • Maintain the inventory of tools, equipment and supplies issued, to ensure that all are available and in usable condition when needed. Inform Lead Landscaper when supplies are needed or equipment needs servicing.
  • Perform the mixing and/or application of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. This work includes filling out chemical use reports and the pesticide storage area log.
  • Place and retrieve animal traps and baits including: gopher bait and traps, squirrel bait and traps, and live traps for the relocation of raccoons.
  • Notify Lead landscaper, or the Manager of Landscape Services, when diseases or pests are observed affecting landscape plant materials.
  • Recommend changes in working conditions or equipment used, in order to increase efficiency or effectiveness.
  • Notify Lead Landscaper and/or the Manager of Landscape Services when appropriate additional skill training is needed to allow you to achieve desired results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Working knowledge of landscaping installation and maintenance techniques and equipment; Ability to organize and properly handle equipment, materials, and documents and keep appropriate records; Ability to display flexibility, teamwork and University values; Ability to represent department in an appropriate manner to campus community; Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English; Ability to lift up to 80 lbs; Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and carry the object a distance of 100 feet; Ability to use desk top computer to access and process records related to: personal payroll information, work orders, ordering of supplies, email, computer based safety and other training, etc. Hand tools: brooms, rakes, shovels, saws, loppers, trimmers, machetes, back pack sprayers, and other hand tools; Motorized equipment: walk behind power mowers, edgers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, power trimmers, chain saws, roto-tillers, power augers, sod cutter, wood chipper, walk behind trencher, motorized herbicide sprayer, and other power tools. Vehicles: pick-up trucks, flatbed trucks with lift gates, tractors, trailers, electric vehicles; Hand trucks, dollies, wheelbarrows, carts, etc; Desktop computer.

Preferred: High School or Equivalent; 2 years of landscaping maintenance related experience.

This is a regular, nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
