The Manager, Insurance & Risk oversees the daily operations of the department to assist in maintaining a safe and healthly environment for the campus community. Duties include working with the university insurance portfolio, maintaining the driver database and fleet roster, researching and developing emergency plans, and providing high quality customer service. This position collaborates regularly with internal constituents across the University and external constituents. The Manager is supervised by the Director, Insurance & Risk.

The Office of Insurance & Risk supports Pepperdine’s mission by facilitating risk discussions and partnering with individuals and departments to develop sound mitigation strategies that enable them to achieve their vision and objectives without compromising the health and safety of the community.


  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Office of Insurance & Risk including: scheduling, responding to internal and external constituents via phone and email, paying bills, maintaining files, coordinating ergonomic evaluations, and creating business processes to maximize office efficiency.
  • Work closely with the Director to manage the University's insurance portfolio including managing the completion of annual insurance renewal applications, claims management, addressing coverage questions, bench marking with other schools, and issuing certificates of insurance.
  • Manage the University's approved drivers including: administering the approval process, requesting and reviewing Motor Vehicle Reports from the DMV, approving individuals to drive, auditing the database, and appropriately notifying the Director when employees are no longer permitted to drive.
  • Serve as Critical Support Personnel for Pepperdine's Emergency Operations Committee and assist in the creation and maintenance of the University's emergency plans.
  • Collaborate in the development and utilization of pro-active risk management and wellness policies and procedures to prevent losses.
  • Assist and support the EH&S Manager as appropriate including scheduling event logistics and supporting Pepperdine's learning management system (LMS).
  • Manage the office''s student workers including training, supervising, and mentoring them to help prepare them for work in professional offices post graduation.
  • Oversee the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Pepperdine's volunteer emergency responders who assist with building evacuations and sharing emergency preparedness information with the University community.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness resources including: supplies, training materials, brochures, guides, updating the University''s Emergency Information Page (, and monthly drills.
  • Develop and prepare materials to lead emergency preparedness and safety trainings for community members including: faculty, staff, and students.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Insurance and Risk, the Chief Human Resources Officer, and/or the Vice President of Administration.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's Degree. Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to provide high level customer service. The ability to maintain a positive attitude among University departments for issues of life safety and risk management. Detail-oriented and ability to multi-task. Able to access all areas of campus for related claims adjustment. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Flexible with changing priorities. Ability to use Google suite programs (Docs, Sheets, etc.).

Preferred: Master's Degree; 2 years office administration experience. Some experience in insurance & claims handling; emergency preparedness experience; higher education experience. Knowledge of PeopleSoft and Microsoft Access.
