The Student Health Center is seeking to hire a full-time Medical Assistant (MA), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), OR Registered Nurse (RN) for its Malibu campus.

The Medical Assistant (MA) OR Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) performs back office duties including obtaining patient history; performing vital signs, phlebotomy, and preparing laboratory specimens; preparing patient for exam; assisting the practitioner; and providing patient education. This position assists with general office duties, telephones, data entry, and utilizes medical software program and PeopleSoft computer program. As a staff member in the Student Affairs department who works closely with students, this person serves as a Christian role model to students.

The Registered Nurse (RN) performs a variety of medical back office duties and procedures at an expert technical level. The RN is the first line support for the medical practitioners and provides oversight for MAs., performing nursing duties as triage, wound care, medication and immunization administration, phlebotomy, point of care testing, patient education, and emergency response. As a staff member in the Student Affairs department who works closely with students, this person serves as a Christian role model to students.

 

MEDICAL ASSISTANT (MA) OR LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE (LVN)

Duties

  • Direct Patient Care: Under the direct supervision of a medical provider, assists in the care of student's illness and injuries; perform diagnostic tests; obtain vital signs; collect laboratory specimens; instruct and prepare patients for examination and diagnostic procedures; assist the practitioner in examination; and perform special procedures to include phlebotomy, minor surgery, orthopedics, ECGs, injections, centrifuging specimens, and autoclaving.
  • Under the direction of the Medical Director and Clinic Nurse Supervisor of the Student Health Center, perform all routine back office medical procedures as outlined in the Back Office Manual; assure reliance of in-house test procedures and correct handling/processing of lab specimens; and understand and follow guidelines of HIPAA policy for patient confidentiality.
  • Perform follow-up patient care duties such as arranging for medical referrals to community resources utilizing the student's medical insurance as appropriate, contacting patients as requested by the practitioners, recommending appropriate follow-up care for symptoms, and ER/urgent care visits.
  • Perform front office duties that include telephone call management, opening and closing the clinic, computer and data entries, making appointments, checking patients in and out, filling in for the front office staff when needed, and following procedures for all back office paperwork including lab work, weekly and monthly log checks, and documentation of care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Certificate from an accredited Medical Assistant Program OR current California Licensed Vocational Nurse.  Experience with rooming patients, phlebotomy, ECG applications, and administering immunizations and injections. Experience with computers and printer/scanner/fax machine, and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google office suite. The MA / LVN must also have a personal faith in Jesus Christ, active involvement in a local church and demonstrate support for the Christian mission of the University with a desire to help students develop lives of purpose, service, and leadership.

Preferred: Two years of recent (within the last three years) experience as an MA or LVN in an acute/outpatient setting. Experience in a primary or urgent care setting. Familiarity with Electronic Health Records

REGISTERED NURSE

Duties

  • Direct Patient Care/Contact: Make appropriate evaluation and assure proper care of illness and injuries; perform diagnostics and obtain vital signs according to established procedures; collect laboratory specimens; administer non-prescription medications as assigned. Instructs and prepares patients for examination and diagnostic procedures. Assist in examination and special procedures to include, but not limited to minor surgery, orthopedic applications, centrifuging, autoclaving, and other special studies/tasks. Performs nursing duties to include procedures such as phlebotomy, giving immunizations, injections, ear lavage, bandaging, splinting, etc. Serves as triage nurse, evaluating the needs of the students presenting as emergencies, as walk-ins and by telephone, and provides follow-up as needed. Provide first aid and evaluates routine episodic problems not needing a physician or physician assistant attention. Delivers pre-packaged, labeled, and properly identified medications to patients on a patient-specific order and reviews dosage, side effects, etc. Provide expanded role nursing duties based on specific back office protocols, e.g. evaluating INH medication, suture removal, eating disorders, travel medicine, STD testing, and allergy injections.
  • Administrative duties: Under the direction of the Director of the Student Health Center, the lead RN, or the Medical Director. The Registered Nurse will be expected to perform all routine Back Office medical procedures as outlined in the Back Office Manual. Assures reliance of in-house test procedures and adequate handling/processing of lab specimens to be sent to outside lab.Understands and follows guidelines of HIPAA policy for patient confidentiality. Evaluates records for immunization compliance. Other duties as assigned.
  • Preventative healthcare: Provide fundamental preventative health care to students of the University. Explain procedures, medications, and other medical-related matters to students; provide for health education to students; arrange for individualized health education as needed.
  • Follow-up patient care duties such as: Arrange for medical referrals to community resources as needed utilizing the student's medical insurance as appropriate; Responsible for calling patients as requested by the practitioners and recommend appropriate follow-up care for symptoms, ER and Urgent Care visits, evaluate medication effectiveness and advise for further care. Responsible for reporting all positive STD testing results to LA County. Performs and reads lab results according to procedure for tests including Strep, Mono, HCG, and Flu. Maintains a continuous information log for each test.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing Program. Valid State of California registration as a Registered Nurse. Knowledge of nursing duties including performing procedures such as phlebotomy, immunizations, injections, ear lavage, bandaging, splinting, etc. The Registered Nurse must have a personal faith in Jesus Christ, active involvement in a local church, and demonstrate support for the Christian mission of the University-seeking to help students develop lives of purpose, service, and leadership.

Preferred: Four year Bachelor of Science, Nursing Degree preferred.
