The Planned Giving Officer works with internal and external constituents to strengthen the advancement work of the University, specifically, the planned giving efforts of the Center for Estate and Gift Planning.

In conjunction with the Executive Director, Associate Director, and leadership and major gift officers, works with current and potential donors to establish planned gifts, major gifts, and in-kind gifts to support the mission of Pepperdine University.


  • Maintain a portfolio of planned giving prospects. Meet regularly with prospects to encourage planned giving opportunities. Prepare planned giving proposals for donors. Identify and create planned giving strategies applicable to specific donor needs and desires. Attend University and community functions. Steward existing donors.
  • Train development staff and volunteers in planned giving tools, techniques, and strategies. 
  • Collaborate on CEGP marketing efforts via print, advertisement, and internet channels.
  • Speak before affinity groups, community groups, and allied professionals on planned giving and charitable giving.
  • Assist and collaborate with advisors (accountants, attorneys, and financial planners) to structure and implement customized planned gift strategies. Work with members of the Pepperdine Estate Planning Network.
  • Other duties as assigned; conduct research related to gift opportunities; serve as a University ambassador; participate in community and professional functions; maintain professional qualifications; participate in advancement meetings; assist in drafting and updating advancement forms, documents, and policies; complete special assignments and projects as needed.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: BA or BS degree. 2+ years' planned giving fundraising experience within a sophisticated non-profit. Experience working with donors on complex planned gifts. Knowledge of planned giving and charitable planning. Excellent writing and oral communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Attention to detail, accuracy and follow up. Excellent work standards and organizational skills. Ability to explain technical issues simply and effectively. Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently and meet time deadlines. Ability to work under pressure with minimal oversight. Strong commitment to Pepperdine's Christian mission. PC or Apple computer literate, Excel, work and other common computer programs. Crescendo or other planned giving software. Raisers Edge or other donor database management software.

Preferred: MBA, CPA, CFP or other advanced degree or professional certification. Higher education experience preferred. Knowledge of tax laws, estate planning strategies, real estate, and financial planning.

This is a regular, exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
