The manager of advancement communications provides strategic, well-written, creative, and persuasive communications to support fundraising efforts for Pepperdine University and its advancement staff. Through informative and persuasive communications for print and digital resources, this position encourages many constituencies to support the mission of Pepperdine and the students we serve. The work of this position reflects and advances our mission and is used as a positive influence in making friends and raising funds for the University. Communications prepared by the manager are used by senior administrators and major gift officers, as well as in printed publications, representing the University's highest standards.


  • Compose and produce custom thank-you letters for significant gifts on behalf of the president and senior vice president for advancement and public affairs.
  • Compose and edit scripts, donor profiles, and other communication elements for special events, including fundraising dinners, graduations, dedications, Founder's Day, and other University programs.
  • Produce and manage content for the Advancement section of the University website, particularly human-interest stories that involve interviewing students, faculty, alumni, and/or donors.
  • Monitor outstanding pledges made to the University, tracking due/overdue payments and working with prospect managers to confirm appropriate follow-up with the donor; compose and produce gift reminders when deemed appropriate by prospect managers.
  • Research and write fundraising proposals and letters of inquiry, cover letters, and supplementary narratives used by leadership and major gift officers.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree; 3–5 years of communications and marketing experience; superior written and oral communications skills in creative writing, marketing, and/or public relations; strong independent judgment.

Preferred: Degree in journalism, English, communications, or marketing/public relations; experience in an educational or nonprofit setting; has had original work published for an external audience.

This is a regular, nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
