The Senior Academic Advisor collaborates with staff and faculty to ensure student success by providing academic advisement and other student services. This position will also supervise the advisement staff to support the Psychology Division. This position is based on the West LA campus with required travel to the Encino or Irvine campus 1 day per week. 

  • Monitor students' academic progress and initiate contact with students whose progress is unsatisfactory; provide academic advisement on matters of curriculum, course registration, and process enrollment requests each term; and build strong relationships with students.
  • Advise students regarding all aspects of their academic program and student services; respond to student inquiries in a timely manner; schedule regular meetings with students and visit the graduate campuses for class visits as needed; problem solve on student related issues; create a welcoming environment; and promote a positive student experience for new and current students.
  • Assist in coordinating registration and orientation activities; participate in staff trainings; gain in-depth understanding of GSEP academic programs in order to counsel students and resolve student issues; perform degree audits and assist with graduation checks each term; and manage the readmission process.
  • Manage the advisement area for the Psychology Division; provide on-going managerial support and training to the staff; ensure that student permanent files contain all official, required information and comply with University policies; and keep business process documents current.
  • Participate in the GSEP graduation commencement ceremony each year and committee work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree. Minimum of 2 years' experience in a related education field. Ability to demonstrate care and compassion in a student-centered environment and establish positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff in support of students and the University mission. Ability to sustain productivity while managing multiple projects. Ability to travel to educational campuses and work some evening and weekends. Appropriate use of technology as required by the position.

Preferred: Master's degree. Minimum of 3 years' experience in working with students in higher education environment. Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal and counseling skills in working with a diverse student population and to advocate for students. Ability to maintain a professional manner and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive student information and situations. Ability to interpret and apply University policies in a manner that supports students and complies with University policies. Strong organizational skills. Ability to communicate diplomatically. Willingness to learn all aspects of student services to assist students and train support staff. Experience with PeopleSoft, Noliji, and general databases and software that are implemented at the University.
