The purpose of the Assistant Director of Communication and Marketing is to implement and influence all student/alumni marketing and communication strategy, functions, vehicles, and procedures/protocols for Seaver College and George Pepperdine College Alumni Relations (SC/GPC AR). This position informs, entertains, serves, and engages students and alumni in ways that contribute to the building of meaningful community and enduring alumni loyalty, thereby increasing philanthropy from alumni to Pepperdine and its students in the form of their time, talents, and financial gifts. This position reports to the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement.


  • Website: Manage overall SC/GPC AR website strategy and ensure content is regularly updated: Alumni stories and "Class Notes"; Event information web pages; General info, contacts, and other resources; Event calendar feeds
  • Email: Manage overall SC/GPC AR email strategy, protocol, procedures: Includes the sending of a monthly e-newsletter to all Seaver and GPC alumni, which requires proactively seeking content in the categories of news, events, and other compelling information; Create marketing campaigns for all team events to include invites, reminders, social, and post-event emails
  • Social Media: Coordinate and maintain our social media presence with/for alumni across multiple platforms including but not limited to PeppConnect, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram; Create weekly content for all managed groups/pages to engage and connect alumni; Manage Social Media Ambassador Program; Recruit and train alumni volunteers; Maintain relationships and coordinate all communication; Be strategic in volunteer participation with effective recognition 
  • Event Registration: Build and maintain online registration sites for all SC/GPC AR events, including social media event and communication platforms; Maintain Seaver/GPC events list and event calendars
  • Video Production: Produce and distribute videos to engage alumni, students, and other constituents (for event marketing, recaps, and other forms of video messaging)
  • Promenade Newsletter: Coordinate production of the bi-annual Promenade Newsletter for George Pepperdine College alumni
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Support cross-departmental partnerships, sharing best practices for marketing and communication processes and promoting alumni engagement opportunities across one another''s channels
  • Supervise student intern: Train and supervise a student intern (budget allowing) as needed during the school year and summer
  • Post-event surveys: Oversee post-event survey creation, distribution, data collection, and analysis following every event
  • Alumni career services: Support the marketing and communication needs of initiatives related to alumni career services and professional development programs, events, and resources. Partner with the Seaver Career Center to administer the "Senior Survey" to collect data from graduating seniors related to Seaver Career Center and Alumni Relations
  • Department event listing: Maintain accurate and complete information daily on the department''s "Events List" Google Sheet
  • Analytics: Regularly study digital analytics across our marketing and communications platforms to analyze our effectiveness with email marketing performance, website traffic, social media activity, and other forms of digital marketing/communication
  • Student life calendar: Submit monthly content to Student Programming Board''s "Student Life Calendar"
  • Department collateral: Develop and maintain printed collateral to educate alumni about our programs, events, and resources (e.g., department info brochure)
  • New-grad email: Create and send a "New Grad" email each May to welcome and inform new Seaver graduates about alumni resources and how to stay connected
  • Manage assigned programming budgets: Carefully and consistently track all expenses and revenues for assigned budgets using "product codes" Substantiate and reallocate credit card statements before posted deadlines
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide thought leadership and perspective for adoption where appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree required. At least three (3) years experience (post-undergraduate graduation) in full-time roles related to key functions/duties of this position (marketing/communication; event/project management; budget management). Understanding of how alumni engagement contributes to or correlates with donor cultivation and successful fundraising for the University. The individual should have full awareness of the positive impact that good public relations has on the cultivation process of current and prospective donors for Pepperdine University. The future financial stability and growth of Pepperdine lies in the hands of our generous donors, many of whom are alumni. Commitment to the University mission and goals are necessary. Robust communication skill set for leading student and alumni volunteers locally and regionally. Strong public speaking skills. Personable, service-driven guest service skills: warmly greeting office visitors; demonstrating polite, friendly, professional, and helpful telephone etiquette; energetically engaging constituents at events. Should also be a self-starter who takes initiative to further the goals of the department by continually conceptualizing, coordinating, and implementing new and innovative offerings for our students and alumni. This individual must be able to prioritize a myriad of assignments such that deadlines and budgets are ultimately met without constant supervision. Similarly, this person must be comfortable leading volunteers and a team of interns, student employees, and full-time staff to coach and lead them to success as they support various alumni engagement efforts. Willingness to work evenings and weekends. Ability to articulate a strong commitment to diversity, and have the ability to work effectively with individuals from different backgrounds. Ability and willingness to load/unload/carry/set up event supplies up to 50 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation. Able to demonstrate expertise with PC usage, Microsoft Office tools, Google Apps (Google Docs/Sheets/Calendars/etc). Ability to adapt quickly to new tools, systems, and processes. Familiarity with popular social media networks (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) for optimizing our ability to connect alumni with the University and one another.

Preferred: Master's degree in a related field. Seaver College alumnus. At least five (5) years experience (post-undergraduate graduation) in full-time roles related to key functions/duties of this position (event/project management; budget management). Experience working with student and alumni volunteers on behalf of a college or university. Knowledge of Pepperdine University software/tools such as The Raiser's Edge, OmniUpdate (website editing/management), Trumba, and/or Salesforce.
