Under the general supervision of the director of Student Engagement and Success, the Assistant Director, Student Engagement is responsible for developing and cultivating an exceptional Graziadio student life experience through program development and planning; event management; and student organization advisement and support. The Office of Student Engagement and Success (SES) drives initiatives and experiences designed to support, nurture, and enhance the student experience at the Graziadio Business School. As an integral member of SES, the Assistant Director works both independently and collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, and other School/University departments in service of the Graziadio School mission to prepare students to become Best for the World leaders.


  • Student Clubs and Organizations: Oversees PGBS student clubs and organizations, providing comprehensive support, training, advisement, and student leadership development to PGBS student clubs and organizations and student leaders. Works closely with student leaders to achieve effective organizational management and to create exceptional student involvement opportunities which promote leadership development, school pride, and community. Develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses student leader trainings in alignment with student learning outcomes. Advises student club leaders regarding event planning best practices, processes, and policies, ensuring excellent service and support for student-led events. Maintains knowledge of and communicates University policies and procedures to student leaders. Develops annual student organization calendar and utilizes Campus Labs/Engage platform to administer the student club and organization registration process and ensure that all requirements are met. Provides resources to department-led student organizations such as Emerging Leaders, Career Advisory Board, and Graziadio Student Ambassadors, assisting staff advisors as needed with organizational recruitment and promotion. Develops and implements a strategic plan to promote student club and organization involvement to the student body utilizing a variety of marketing tools, activities, and initiatives. Oversees the PGBS Student Activity Fee allocated budget and student organization-related expenses; processes student organization reimbursements and vendor contract payments. Serves as co-advisor for the Graziadio Student Life Council, creating a meaningful, educational, and fulfilling involvement experience for student members. Assists the Student Life Council in administering a fair and equitable process for student activity fee budget requests and allocations.
  • Event Management: Oversees the smooth and seamless execution of all pre-event, on-site, and post-event communication, promotion, logistics and assessment for SES events and programs, including, but not limited to, student club and organization events, trainings, and activities; fall and spring full-time programs new student orientation; and annual signature programs and events such as the Graziadio Student Involvement Fair. Coordinates and communicates with vendors, presenters, campus partners, and volunteers/peer leaders regarding new student orientation planning and schedules, ensuring stakeholder participation in all aspects of the event. Proactively researches, anticipates, and ensures risk management practices and safety procedures are in place for all events and consistent with University policy.
  • Programs and Initiatives: Collaborates with students and University partners to develop, promote, and implement high-quality social, cultural, and informational student programs and initiatives that contribute to a lively, vibrant, and thriving campus culture in which students build community, engage with diverse perspectives, and actively participate in co-curricular programs. Strategically develops programmatic objectives, events, and activities that focus on specific learning outcomes based on assessed student needs. Provides significant contribution to the thematic and programmatic development of new student orientation, providing a high level of input based on best practice research, assessment, and student development knowledge to create a welcoming, informative, and exceptional new student experience. Assists in the creation and implementation of a strategic plan to promote SES programs and services to the student body utilizing a variety of marketing tools, technology, activities, and initiatives. Works closely with the Director to develop an annual student engagement and success plan/calendar in alignment with departmental/School objectives and goals.
  • Supervision: Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises student employees,providing an excellent developmental and enriching employment experience. Sets clear goals and objectives for student employees in order to support a positive learning environment and to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Liaison: Actively builds and maintains collaborative, strategic partnerships with University partners to expand the reach and effectiveness of SES programs and initiatives. Maintains knowledge of Pepperdine University resources in order to refer students to other student support services as appropriate, including advising, Career and Professional Development, Office of Student Accessibility, Office of International Student Services, and Counseling Center.
  • Assessment: Initiates and conducts ongoing assessment to determine program effectiveness and if learning outcomes were achieved. Participates in assessment projects with the SES team. Initiates, coordinates, and develops data collection methods, development of learning outcomes, strategic implementation of assessment tools, and written reports. Maintains ongoing awareness of technology, trends, patterns, and challenges impacting graduate student engagement, using such knowledge to recommend/assist the director in the development and implementation of future initiatives. Maintains accurate and timely records for documenting student involvement and program impact.
  • University and Professional Expectations: Promotes and upholds the University mission through work performed. Participates in ongoing professional development and attends all staff trainings and meetings. Recommends and develops processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental/student service functions. Participates in professional associations to remain apprised of current research and issues pertaining to higher education, new student orientation, assessment, and student development (i.e., NACA, NASPA, NODA, CAS). Supports committees and other programs that promote student success and other department or University initiatives. Maintains confidentiality of student information at all times (as per FERPA).

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of three years of relevant full-time professional experience in a student affairs or student service-related area with evidence of proficiency and potential for further growth. Demonstrated experience working with student organization administration and independently advising and training student leaders and groups. Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-faceted events and communicating effectively with a variety of vendors and campus partners. Ability to work independently and exercise autonomy in planning and organizing work in order to meet competing objectives and priorities; superior knowledge of event coordination, logistics, risk management principles, and working with vendors; ability to take initiative and work collaboratively within a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with frequent interruptions; ability to form and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students and colleagues across campus; demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations, exercise good judgment, maintain confidentiality, identify solutions and consistently apply policies and procedures; ability to anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts, and maintain a strong philosophical base for student learning and engagement; excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; superior customer service skills; strong organizational, time management, prioritization, and administrative capabilities; proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines; demonstrated ability to comfortably, professionally, and effectively interact, collaborate, and communicate with diverse stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, senior administrators) within a higher education setting. Highly proficient in Google-based platforms, MS Office-Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, file sharing, mobile devices, PC, Mac, phones, scanning, and copiers/printers.

Preferred: Graduate degree in education, counseling, or other relevant field. Four or more years of relevant full-time professional experience working in a student affairs or similar student support role serving a diverse student population with varying levels of need. Experience hiring, recruiting, supervising and training student employees. Experience working with a large international student population is highly desired. Demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural environment; demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures; demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity; experience collaborating with and supporting diverse communities; understanding of budget management principles; strategic mindset to proactively anticipate and plan for the delivery of annual programs, services, and initiatives according to the academic calendar; understanding of and the ability to apply student development theories to practice; experience in student training and leadership development; competency with data collection and analysis methods to assess learning and achievement. Aptitude for learning and implementing new technologies and devices; experience with 25Live, Trumba, and PeopleSoft; familiarity with Campus Labs/Engage or OrgSync student organization management platforms, demonstrated ability to leverage current and emerging technology tools to enhance student communication and engagement.

Salary: $58,000-$60,000 annually
