The Graphic Design and Print Production Assistant provides valuable services such as graphic design, printing, and binding to Pepperdine students and staff. This position is responsible for typesetting, layout, prepress, operating Ricoh sheetfed digital color presses and the binding equipment in the Printing Services department. This role will be required to work in both the Calabasas and Malibu campus locations. He/she will help students and staff to produce print projects including but not limited to: documents, posters, pamphlets, brochures and bound materials from digital files, graphics, and design software.

This position will follow the Living Pepperdine standards in day to day work; participate in Daily Line-Ups and be able to articulate how the standards tie to daily work.

Ability to work in both the Calabasas and Malibu campuses. Provide a prompt, high level of customer service to community members.Demonstrates excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Send digital files (PDF format) for print and finishing from the Fiery Command Workstation to Ricoh and OKI printers using instructions from written work orders. Setup, adjust and operate bindery equipment and hand tools. Feed books and related articles such as periodicals and pamphlets into binding machines, following specifications. Assist students with printing needs.
  • Assist lead graphic designer with typesetting, layout, updating copy, other prepress duties, and upholding/implementing University branding standards.
  • Provide quality control on finished jobs, including but not limited to printing issues, finishing defects, correct quantities, and confirming the completed materials match the requested order.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills over the phone and through email, providing a prompt, high level of customer service to community members. Interpret written work orders and verbal instructions.
  • Observe and monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions and to determine whether adjustments are needed.
  • Maintain printers and bindery equipment to ensure optimal working condition. Advise supervisor is maintenance is needed. Operate hydraulic paper cutter.
  • Pack completed orders and ship completed work.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: High School Diploma. Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds for up to 30 feet; ability to work in a noisy environment and stand or sit for prolonged periods doing repetitive tasks. Ability to read and write in English and interpret verbal instructions. Ability to work with tight deadlines and demanding customers in a friendly and professional manner. Willingness to learn new software, technology, and machinery relating to graphics, digital files, and equipment. Customer service relating to a production environment. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree, One-year minimum experience working in a print shop. Software: Google G Suite, Microsoft Office, and Fiery Command WorkStation. Equipment: Ricoh, OKI, Duplo, and bindery.
