The Manager of Pepperdine University's Institutional Review Board (IRB) will provide the administrative and technical support for the day-to-day activities of the Graduate and Professional Schools' (GPS) and Seaver Institutional Research Boards (IRB) and provide student, staff, and faculty advisement regarding the IRB submission process. This position supports the protection of human subjects, compliance issues, and ethical practices in research for Pepperdine University's five schools.


  • Works closely with the IRB Chairpersons to manage IRB protocol submissions and assignments to IRB reviewers using the eProtocol system. This includes checks for application completeness, supporting documentation, appropriate classification, etc.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal and local regulations pertaining to human subjects research and works with IRB Chairpersons and the Assistant Provost for Research to support and implement research policies and procedures. This includes website updates and development of appropriate resources for students, faculty, and staff (i.e. training).
  • Serves as voting member of the IRB committee(s) and reviewer to evaluate IRB protocols to ensure that regulatory and ethical standards for the protection of human subjects are met.
  • Evaluates the IRB application, review, and audit processes and submit quarterly reports summarizing the results, including improvement recommendations, implementation plans, and other reports as needed (e.g. WASC or other agency accreditation).
  • Assists with the preparation of convened IRB meetings.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary correspondence and/or forms to distribute to students, staff, faculty, or other participating individuals/organizations.
  • Manages primary IRB and eProtocol email inboxes and follows up with inquiries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Upholds the University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: BA/BS degree required and three years of related experience with federal human subjects research regulations or other related research experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, ability to work with people, public relations skills, ability to function and handle multiple tasks under pressure, ability to perceive overall applications and concepts, ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive material with discretion, and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Aptitude and willingness to learn new computer software programs, PC literacy. Knowledge of federal human subjects research regulations. Knowledge of word-processing (Microsoft Word) and email usage.

Preferred: Master's degree and two years of related experience with federal human subjects research regulations. Certification as an IRB professional (CIP) is highly desirable. Experience with the eProtocol IRB system or related system. Spreadsheet and shared data management systems (i.e. Excel, Google Drive).
