The Public Safety Field Supervisor provides leadership and daily supervision to all officers and field operational support while on duty. The Field Supervisor directly supervises field activity, assignments, and personnel as the watch commander. This position will work an overnight schedule


  • Support the University mission, ethics code, and all applicable standards and policies by encouraging and maintaining a safe, peaceful, and orderly community through education, enforcement, emergency response, and services delivered 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
  • Spend the majority of time in the field in pursuit of the successful completion of building security checks; foot/vehicle patrols; officer report writing; booth operations; parking enforcement; fleet management, including vehicle check off sheets; key control; daily briefing meetings; officer activity logs; scheduling; service requests; trainings; crime prevention education; and other designated duties.
  • Liaise as needed with representative from outside public safety agencies including but not limited to: police, fire, government agencies, private investigators, and forensic specialists.
  • Provide training relevant to areas of responsibility to members of the department.
  • Devote full attention to responsibilities when on duty.
  • Develop and maintain positive community relations through community-oriented public safety goals to create bonds of trust and reliance between officers and members of our community.
  • Serve as incident commander and event supervisor as needed.
  • Collaborate with and support Public Safety personnel and members of the Pepperdine community to foster and maintain a positive, honorable, fiscally prudent, efficient, and professional work environment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the director of Public Safety.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: High school education or equivalent. Supportive of the Christian mission of Pepperdine University; ability and desire to promote the University's mission. Supportive of and willingness to adhere to the University's Code of Ethics. Possess or obtain within the first 90 days of employment CPR and basic first aid certificates. Strong interpersonal skills, including a pleasant disposition; and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently. Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in stressful situations. Ability and willingness to work a wide variety of shifts including late night/early morning hours, weekends and holidays. Possibly working extended shifts on short notice and/or being called into work outside normal scheduled hours. Ability and willingness to be available for calls from on-duty personnel 24-hours a day. Available to work a 4-day, 10-hour work week and ability to rotate to new shift assignments as assigned. Knowledge of crowd control and traffic enforcement techniques. Strong oral and written communication skills. Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and public safety methods. General knowledge of local, state, and federal laws including the California Vehicle Code. Ability to supervise others. Must pass thorough background investigation. Ability to access all areas of campus on foot, including mountainous terrain. Must possess a valid Class C California driver's license and good driving record. Able to proficiently use a computer and enter data into a variety of computer software programs; communicate daily on email.

Preferred: Two years of college. Three years of public safety experience or related. Three years of supervisory experience in public safety or related preferred. P.O.S.T. Basic Modular Course Level III, Level II, and Level I; or P.O.S.T. Basic Academy; or P.O.S.T. Modules A, B, C, and D; or Appointed as a Level One Reserve Officer prior to January 1, 1997, strongly preferred. A minimum of a California Fire Fighter 1 or Basic Fire Academy Certification. Hazardous Materials First Operational Responder certification or higher preferred. Experience with Pepperdine.

This is a regular, nonexempt, 40 hour per week, 10 hour per day position.

Salary: Minimum $19.83 per hour.
