Under direction of the Manager of Structural Services for the Department of Facilities Services (DFS), and in collaboration with colleagues, the Structural Services Lead Multi-Craftsman will act as a lead to Multi-Craftsmen and other Structural Services personnel. This position will perform skilled carpentry work and provide technical expertise to support University operations in masonry, roofing, painting, drywall, and other handyman tasks to ensure a comfortable, safe, and clean environment in which the University can live, learn, and work. The position will also supervise Structural Services personnel and oversee relevant construction, repair, and renovation work utilizing plans, specifications, and verbal instructions. The Structural Services Lead Multi-Craftsman will collaborate with DFS and other University departments to initiate and deliver high quality projects in a timely manner.

Duties

  • Manage and respond to work order requests and supervisors' directions to perform troubleshooting, installation, repairs, replacements, and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform multi-craftsman and maintenance work to fit and install hardware, finishes, equipment, floor and ceiling systems, windows, doors, door frames, weather stripping, trim, partitions, drywall, and paneling.
  • Operate woodworking equipment and machines to saw, cut, plane, drill, and/or mortise lumber to construct , erect, and/or repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard including doors, cabinets, shelves, molding, partitions, stairs, and related fixtures.
  • Use applicable information to determine type of material required and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
  • Prepare layouts and cut materials to prescribed measurements. Assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten them together with appropriate hardware and/or adhesives.
  • Verify trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter''s level. Properly lay subflooring to keep out moisture. Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and/or decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete. Pour and finish concrete. Erect scaffolding and ladders. Complete minor repairs on furniture and other furnishings, assemble pre-fabricated furniture, and handle proper mounting of display cases, chalk and whiteboards, picture frames, and signage. Manage, coordinate, and perform painting, drywall, and plaster work with internal and external participants.
  • Provide event set-up assistance as needed.
  • Manage materials, parts, and equipment, including inventory tracking, record keeping, product research, and supply procurement. Research, prepare, manage, and present information including programs, estimates, budgets, schedules, and status reports.
  • Perform all work to be in compliance with plans, specifications, applicable codes, industry standards, best practices, and Pepperdine standards.
  • Identify and address issues in need of attention and generate work orders accordingly. Accurately record and report all work performed indicating the time and materials expended. Perform regular administrative tasks such as maintaining files, processing paperwork, entering data, and monitoring systems.
  • Maintain required trade-specific training and certifications and obtain further training as needed. Improve the knowledge and skills of others, including identifying areas for enhancement, developing training programs, and teaching, instructing, and mentoring Structural Services personnel. Manage vendors and contractors as required.
  • Assist other trades (electrical and mechanical) with tasks as needed.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with internal and external project participants to ensure that all parties are well-informed and that work proceeds on schedule with minimal impact to University operations. Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Proof of legal U.S. working status. Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Five (5) years of carpentry or applicable experience in a facilities maintenance and/or commercial construction. Previous supervisory experience. Broad technical knowledge of practices, principles, and techniques in the carpentry field, to include framing and rough carpentry. The ability to understand plans, design specifications, and manufacturers' instructions and recommendations to ascertain the configuration of relevant equipment and components, ensure their proper installation, and remedy issues. Competency using tools and operating equipment of the trade, such as hand and power tools including drill, saws, and sanders. Analytical and problem solving skills to successfully resolve issues. Working knowledge of and/or willingness to learn locksmith skills. Strong English written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Must consistently project a professional demeanor and positive attitude. Ability to work independently and as a team. Willingness and ability to periodically work overtime hours, respond to emergency calls after hours/weekends, and work rotating weekend shifts providing general maintenance duties for the campus. Basic computer skills and competency with Microsoft Office.

Preferred: Previous university experience. Completion of a recognized carpenter apprenticeship and/or construction trade certification. Previous roofing experience. Knowledge of applicable OSHA and regulatory requirements is preferred. Experience with computerized maintenance management software, such as TMA.
