In collaboration with the dean, associate dean for strategy and special projects, and assistant dean for administration, update and implement our multi-year strategic plan to guarantee sustainable student enrollment in the School of Public Policy’s academic and professional programming.


  • OVERVIEW: Oversee the Office of Program Services and Admissions, which is tasked to grow the Master of Public Policy enrolled student body to 100-120 students through innovative recruitment strategies, recruit and onboard new students in any newly created academic and professional program offerings, onboard new Master of Public Policy and other program students - such as those offered at the Pepperdine Washington, DC, campus - in a manner consistent with the mission and values of Pepperdine University and the School of Public Policy. This includes providing or supervising the delivery of excellent and personalized student services, including academic advising, financial aid assistance, and professional development coaching, and continuing the implementation of an alumni affairs outreach and service plan to keep School of Public Policy alumni engaged and committed to the School of Public Policy. In this capacity, the assistant dean will be responsible for the budget of the Office of Program Services and Admissions and work with the assistant dean for administration to ensure funds are allotted and used effectively and efficiently. In addition to overseeing and when necessary executing, recruitment, admissions, program services, and alumni affairs duties, the assistant dean for admissions and program relations will serve (as delegated by the dean) as the primary point of contact for existing and newly developed educational and program partners, related to these duties. In collaboration with the dean, the assistant dean will update and implement a program relations strategic plan that will leverage relationships across academia - both internally within Pepperdine University and externally among other Church of Christ sister schools, other Christian universities and colleges (particularly member institutions of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities), along with other policy and academic institutions to promote successful recruitment, admissions, and enrollment. These relationships may also serve to support career service opportunities for current students and alumni. In this ambassadorial capacity, the assistant dean will further strengthen existing relationships, such as those through the Pepperdine Policy Partners Program (P4), as well as discover and develop new relationships. The assistant dean will serve on a variety of Pepperdine University committees, including (but not limited to) the various PeopleSoft administrative committees, the Data Standards Committee, any recruitment-oriented committees and Office of International Student Services committees, and others deemed necessary by the dean. Understanding this position is not solely responsible for the following duties, the position will be evaluated by the dean in performance of: 1. Building and maintaining student enrollment in the degree and summer programs against agreed upon (with the dean) targets; 2. Developing and connecting students and alums to internship and career opportunities (gauged by standard career placement metrics and internship placements); 3. Elevating the recognition among the broader policy, academic, and political communities of the School of Public Policy (gauged by advancement of partnership opportunities in the interest of recruitment in conjunction with the dean); 4. Management of staff in their support of prospective and current students; (gauged by the assistant dean's annual survey).
  • PROGRAM RELATIONS, RECRUITMENT AND BRAND AWARENESS: Revise and implement strategies and plans to strengthen existing educational and program partnerships and build new relationships for the School of Public Policy's Master of Public Policy program, its Washington, DC Policy Scholars program, and other academic and professional programming to promote enrollment and professional development. These relationships should be across academia - both internally at Pepperdine University and externally with other like-minded and appropriately targeted institutions - and the political, policy, and public affairs communities, exploring both domestic and international relationships and opportunities. These partnerships should primarily focus on increasing prospective students/applicants. In conjunction with the director of program services and admissions and the two program services managers, develop and execute an innovative recruitment plan that takes advantage of in-person recruitment events, digital recruitment, targeted advertising, and program relationships. Serve as a voting member of the School of Public Policy Admissions Committee. As it relates to the advancement of recruitment/admissions/enrollment, program services, alumni engagement, serve as point of contact for educational and program partners, and act as ambassador for the School of Public Policy and representative of the dean, both internally and externally. Act as School of Public Policy representative to relevant Pepperdine University committees and governing boards. In collaboration with the dean, assistant director of engagement and programs, director of program services and admissions, and program services managers for professional development and alumni affairs and for admissions and office management, and manager of marketing and communications, develop and implement a marketing and advertising strategy for the School of Pubic Policy's programs including the overall promotion of the School of Public Policy's image.
  • SUPERVISORY AND OFFICE MANAGEMENT: Lead the Office of Program Services and Admissions, which includes supervision of up to three full-time, exempt positions, including a director of program services and admissions, a program services manager for professional development and alumni affairs, and a program services manager for admissions and office management, as these positions provide recruitment/admissions/enrollment, program services and professional development, and alumni services to the School of Public Policy's various constituents. Develop and supervise plans to execute successful recruitment/admissions/enrollment services to prospective students, applicants, and new matriculates, program services (including academic advising, financial aid, and professional development coaching) to degree-seeking and non-degree seeking students, and alumni relations to the broader School of Public Policy alumni community. Oversee and as necessary, delegate execution of the MPP 608 and MPP 699 program requirements. Review/audit all Office of Program Services and Admissions expenses submitted including externally funded activities.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree required in management, marketing, or related field to the School of Public Policy (i.e., public administration, public policy, history, political science, economics, statistics, most social sciences). Working 5-10 years’ experience in comparable position considered for degree equivalency. A minimum of 5 years in an academic/policy environment (university, think tank, policy organization, political organization) with a successful track record of building relationships with leaders in these areas (i.e., professors, department deans, policy researchers, think tank executives, political leaders, etc.). In particular, candidate should be familiar with the Christian/religious college environment along with the networks of liberal arts colleges, universities, and student organizations. Candidates should have some familiarity with financial aid development and procedures, as well as some understanding of the admissions process.

Superior work ethic for long hours, including evenings and weekends. High energy level required to meet the demands of the position. Must be able to sustain high level of productivity under stress, while maintaining accuracy and positive public image to all students, clients and audiences; ability to scan quickly and accurately detailed reports and correspondence to discover critical success factors and items. Must be willing to travel a minimum of three months a year for extended periods of time, ability to drive to various locations, must own car and have good driver record. Experience in developing strategic plans within an academic/policy environment and working with others to achieve challenging goals. Effective communication skills, oral and written, including editing ability. Superior interpersonal and public relations skills; well-developed university/policy relationships, managerial/supervisory skills, knowledge and experience in educational administration relative to institutional management. Candidate should have some background in communications with awareness of social media platforms and basic marketing concepts. Ability to analyze broadly defined policies/activities and formulate plans for implementation of recruitment, financial aid, and student services issues; ability to initiate and take independent action.

Knowledge of internet and software for admissions, recruitment, and financial aid required, including CRM databases and on-line admission applications; experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Education suite (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Hangout, Sites); preference given to those with broad experience in software used in the position, examples as follows:

  • Recruit/Admissions: Salesforce CRM, Marketing Cloud, Oracle/PeopleSoft, and Etrieve Imaging
  • Career/Alumni/Relationship Development: Handshake, Mentor Collective, and Raiser’s Edge
  • Financial Aid: US Department of Education Origination and Disbursement, National Student Loan Data System (clearinghouse), and Oracle/PeopleSoft

Preferred: Master's degree in management, marketing, or related field to the School of Public Policy (i.e., public administration, public policy, history, political science, economics, statistics, most social sciences). Preferred candidates will have some background of writing/speaking on public policy issues whether in an academic context or to wider audiences. Preferred candidate will have some experience in developing academic programs/events for networking purposes. Preference given for a candidate with recruitment experience for academic or quasi-academic organizations.
