This position is required to support the Director of Financial Aid in successful analysis, awarding, verification, and disbursement of student financial aid. The Financial Aid Specialist will interact with students over the phone, in person, and via email communication in a courteous and professional manner to provide timely information in response to inquiries and requests about students’ financial aid options.

This position administers key functions to ensure seamless student financial aid services, contributes to effective enrollment management, and assures students' satisfaction.

Duties

  • Deliver accurate and courteous service to current and prospective students in person, on the phone, and via email regarding all aspects of financial aid application processing, need analysis, appeal processing and packaging, including information on institutional, federal, and state financial aid program.
  • Oversee aspects of one or more federal, state, or institutional program including, but not limited to, origination, disbursement, monthly reconciliation, error resolution, awarding, packaging, reporting, etc.
  • Provide outreach to students to assist with completion of missing documents and information and ensure financial aid packaging is completed in a timely manner. 
  • Oversee data accuracy, integrity, quality, and retention including periodic reviews of system records and funds for accuracy and status checks.
  • Responsible for working with other departments on campus and outside agencies effectively and appropriately to identify and resolve issues such as: financial aid eligibility and program-specific issues.
  • Remain competent and current on systems and financial aid through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, and/or attending professional development courses/conferences.
  • Present and take questions at new student orientations.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's Degree and current experience in the federal and state aid delivery system. A minimum of five (5) years related experience in a similar position is considered equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. A minimum of three years of current experience with administering financial aid programs. Thorough knowledge of federal and CA state financial aid programs and regulations. Ability to interpret and apply complex federal and state regulations in awarding student aid. Understanding and deep appreciation of sound customer service principles. The desire to learn all aspects of student financial aid. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, familiarity with imaging processes, web-based systems and applications. Familiarity with ELM, NSLDS, COD.

Preferred: Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Business or Finance. Five years of position-related experience.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
