Pepperdine University is looking for a degreed Accountant with a solid work ethic, excellent judgment, and a desire to build a long-term career with us. The Accountant will be highly organized, detailed-oriented, and have outstanding accounting analytical and problem-solving abilities. It is important to work effectively and efficiently with minimal oversight, but also function well within a team environment.


  • Journal entries prepared and verified in compliance with GAAP and FASB rules, but use judgement to determine the appropriate set of accounts to be used. Clear communication with employees across the University and sometimes provide guidance on appropriate account details to be used for journal entries. Journal entries will cover all areas, including but not limited to, domestic and international banking activity, grants, financial aid, and corrections to subsystem journals such as accounts payable, payroll, and gift donations. Sometimes will review journal entries prepared by outside departments for accuracy. Meet both month-end and year-end deadlines for processing journal entries. Understand accrual accounting and be able to apply it appropriately. 
  • Conduct regular bank and account reconciliations to ensure the accuracy of the general ledger. Must take ownership of the account activity, and use judgement to determine if discrepancies need to be addressed immediately, or will resolve over time. Need to understand who to work with to resolve issues, and maintain constant communication until issues are resolved. Provide advice to others on steps needed to resolve discrepancies, specifically for University events and gift donation transactions. Provide input to upper management on improving financial processes to alleviate future issues. 
  • Prepare complex audit schedules related to accounts and areas of responsibility. Use independent judgment and discretion to work directly with outside auditors to provide applicable information, and answer questions in order to obtain successful outcomes for annual audits. Assist Accounting Manager with London audit schedules.
  • Responsible for using own judgement to correctly prepare financial reports for various departments. Need to ensure created reports are accurate and clear for users so that correct information is communicated to both internal and external requestors. Review and recommend corrections on various financial reporting prepared by other University areas. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field. Three years of accounting experience with an automated financial system. Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures. Detail-oriented. Ability to quickly learn new programs and applications. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to organize and prioritize a large volume of documents/data for timely and accurate processing. Problem-solving experience. Ability to maintain favorable relationships, effective communication, and a high level of customer service with the University community. Strong proficiency in the use of PC programs, including Excel and word processing programs. Knowledge and experience using an automated-accounting system. Database and ad hoc reporting experience.

Preferred: Higher education or not-for-profit organization accounting experience.

Prior experience using PeopleSoft or Oracle ERP systems.
